What the app stores

ShakeNote saves two things on your computer, in its own folder:

  • Your notes. Each note keeps its text, the time you wrote it, and the name of the app and window you were in.
  • A few settings: your shake sensitivity, whether ShakeNote launches at startup, and whether you’ve seen the welcome window.

Nothing is stored anywhere else.

The app and window name

When you shake the mouse (or press Ctrl+Alt+N), ShakeNote reads the name of the app in front and its window title, like “Chrome · Lecture 12: The Cell - YouTube”. That label is saved with the note so you can find it later.

It only reads this at the moment you open the pad. It doesn’t take screenshots, record your screen, or read what’s inside other apps.

Watching for the shake

To notice a shake, ShakeNote checks where your mouse pointer is while it runs in the background. Those positions are used on the spot to spot the side-to-side movement and are never saved or sent anywhere.

What leaves your PC

Your notes, settings and app names never leave your computer. There’s no sync, no analytics and no crash reporting.

The one exception is updates. The version from shakenote.site checks for a newer version a few seconds after it starts, and again when you click Check for updates in Settings. That check asks [UPDATE HOST] for the latest version number, nothing else. Like any web request, the server sees your IP address. If an update is available, it only downloads and installs when you click it.

The Microsoft Store version doesn’t check for updates itself. The Store handles that.

Your clipboard is only touched when you click Copy on a note.

If a future version adds anything else that uses the internet, this page will say so before that version ships.

Deleting your notes

  • Delete a single note from the saved-notes drawer.
  • To remove everything, quit ShakeNote from the tray, press Win + R, type %APPDATA% and press Enter, then delete the com.alizain.shake-note folder.
  • Turning off “Launch at startup” in Settings removes ShakeNote from your startup apps.
